Fernandez, Ray & His Court - Soul Freedom

This record constitutes darkhorse Afro-Cuban funk from the Miami-based Sound Triangle stable of artists, which includes Pearly Queen and Coke, among others. It is unclear as to whether percussionist Ray Fernandez is related to Peter Fernandez, a lead singer for Coke. Before establishing his "Court," Ray Fernandez worked as a session player with Mongo Santamaria and Bud Powell. It's ridiculous how stealth Fernandez and his music has been over the years, but recently his group's albums have been reissued. A Ray Fernandez and His Court song entitled "La Senorita Lola" appears on the Hialeah Social Club - From Cuba to Hialeah compilation. The group's name is also reflected literally in the album iconography. On the cover of the album in which "Soul Freedom" appears, the king and his court are dressed in full faux royal attire.
